From What Is to What If

March 10, 2025

In the spirit of Women's History Month, we reflect on audacity—the boldness to look at what is and ask, what if? What if all children had access to an outstanding education, guided by exceptional teachers and a challenging curriculum? And what if true educational excellence also meant learning how to collaborate, play, and form meaningful connections with people both similar to and different from ourselves? Two of our earliest founders, Reverend Connie Delzell and Betty Luce, dared to ask these questions and worked relentlessly to turn their vision into reality.

Reverend Constance K. "Connie" Delzell is no stranger to shattering barriers. As the first woman in Colorado to complete the full Episcopal ordination process, she paved the way for future generations of women in ministry. During her tenure as Vicar of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Denver (1991–2008), she expanded the congregation, strengthened outreach programs, and deepened the church’s commitment to lifelong learning. Under her leadership, St. Andrew’s regained parish status, and her steadfast dedication to inclusion and social justice left a lasting impact on the community. Her foresight and determination in St. Elizabeth’s formative years helped establish an educational environment rooted in accessibility and belonging.

Betty Luce, a longtime Trustee and devoted member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, has been an influential force in the Denver community for decades. A passionate champion of historic preservation, she has played a pivotal role in shaping Denver’s neighborhoods. Her deep commitment to service led her to establish Bethany House, a nonprofit that provided affordable housing for individuals with AIDS. Equally dedicated to children and education, she was instrumental in the evolution of St. Elizabeth’s—from its beginnings as an afterschool program in the basement of St. Andrew’s to its growth into a thriving K–8 school. Her steadfast advocacy and generosity helped shape St. Elizabeth’s into the institution it is today.

This Women’s History Month, we honor the audacity, vision, and tireless efforts of Reverend Connie Delzell and Betty Luce—two extraordinary women who transformed what if into reality.
