Writing

Students will develop and strengthen his or her written communication skills through multiple styles and subject matters. Some areas of concentration will include persuasive writing, historical/non-fictional writing, fictional/creative writing, and analytical essays.

English: Reading and Language Arts

Students will read a variety of chapter books throughout the year. They will be asked to analyze, decode, and reflect on various genres and subject matters. Examples of books include:

  • The Giver by Lois Lowry
    Jona receives training from the Giver, through which he learns a lot about the truth of life.
  • A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park
    Tree-ear, an orphan in Ch’ulp’o, travels a far distance through many obstacles to deliver a single shard to a royal court. Through his journey he learns how to prove himself.
  • My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George *boys book club*
    A young boy, unhappy with his city life, runs away to the mountains to find him self.
  • Number The Stars by Lois Lowry
    Danish Resistance smuggles an entire Jewish population of Denmark across the sea to Sweden. Through the eyes of a 10 year old, Annemarie, we learn about the trials of this journey.

    A Korean American girl tells her life story about leaving Korea.
  • The Power of One by Bruce Courtenay
    Set in 1939, as Hitler comes to power, the repercussion can be seen in South Africa. In this story, Peekay embarks on a life-changing journey that will shape him forever.

Math

  • Big Ideas by Houghton Mifflin
    Students will have two options in 7th grade. They will either continue on grade level text moving deeper into all aspects of mathematical thinking, or they will be placed in an accelerated program; which will push them at a faster pace into more complex ideas.
